I am trying to sort out my medial insurance for my application for a 4 month visa to portugal. I read somewhere that if you have US insurance as well as Medicare that that suffices and you don’t need to buy more to start. Is that correct?
Also How do you open a bank account in Portugal if you are not there.

    Hi Alison,

I’m not sure about the US insurance (I would need to see a source) but generally you need travel insurance when you visit another country as the cover you need is different. This applies to tourism visits and also if you’re coming on a residency visa such as the D7 before your interview with SEF.

You don’t need a Portuguese bank account to take out travel insurance but if you do need a PT bank account anyway I’ve written an article about opening a bank account from outside Portugal – https://www.portugalist.com/opening-portuguese-bank-account-online/

If I have an Italian identity card and medical card, will Portugal accept these as my medical insurance?

    Thank you
