Finding hotels that are great for families isn’t easy, and that can definitely feel like the case in Porto. Porto’s accommodation, like so many other cities, feels like it was setup to cater for couples or, in the case of all the hostels, young, single travellers. For families, it can be hard to know where to stay.

Porto is actually a great city for families. It was the inspiration for a lot of symbolism and maybe even characters within Harry Potter, it’s within easy access of the beach, and it has many beautiful gardens and parks. I’s definitely a family trip that you’re going to remember for a long time to come, so it’s worth persevering and looking through all those hotel booking sites.

To save you some time, here are a few hotels that definitely cater to families.

The Yeatman Hotel

The Yeatman Hotel may not be the first hotel that springs to mind when you think of family-friendly hotels but, as well as catering to couples and luxury travellers, The Yeatman is also surprisingly incredibly family-friendly.

Not only does it offer a kid’s club and a babysitting service, which is perfect if mummy and daddy want to sneak away to some of the nearby Port Houses, but kids also get colouring books on arrival as well.

Here’s just a few reasons why the Yeatman is great for families:

  • It has a kid’s club (ages 3-16).
  • It has a babysitting service (reservation required).
  • Children’s menus are available at the restaurant.
  • It has indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
  • Children get colouring books on arrival.
  • It has private, walled grounds for the children to play in.
  • It’s in a quiet location, but still not far from the city centre.

Spot Family Suites

Spot Family Suites are aparthotels in Porto that have been specifically designed for families. Each suite has a kitchenette with a microwave (perfect for heating milk) and a toaster (perfect for snacks), which may come in useful. The suites vary in size, and the Master Suite can take up to six people.

Here’s what’s great about these suites:

  • The hotel has been designed with families in mind.
  • Concierge service to help you decide what to do in Porto.
  • Breakfast is available, and normally included free within the price.

Don’t be put off by the name: the Gallery Hostel is more of a budget boutique hotel than a traditional hostel. It’s certainly not a party hostel, and tends to mainly attract travellers in 30s and 40s – some of which have kids.

As a family, the best thing would be to book out one of the 4-bed dormitory rooms for everyone to stay in.

  • It’s reasonably affordable.
  • It’s a fun place to stay.
  • There are books, DVDs, and board games to keep the kids entertained.

Orbitur Canidelo

Another option, which is a bit of a wildcard, is to stay a little outside of Porto City Centre on a family campsite. Orbitur Canidelo is situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, just 15-20 minutes from Central Porto by car or taxi.

The chalet-style accommodation is perfect for families, and there are also plenty of on-site facilities that are perfect for kids of all ages.

Some of those facilities include:

  • A playground
  • Children’s entertainment
  • Swimming Pool
  • Padding or children’s pool
  • Games Room

Other Alternatives

Alternatively, rather than book a hotel, you could stay in an apartment instead. Apartments often work better for families as they have much more space, and have communal areas like a living room or kitchen which is much nicer than everyone sitting on the hotel bed.

Booking.com has plenty of apartments in Porto, and there’s also Airbnb as well.
