Once upon a time, there were wine clubs. You paid a subscription fee, and every month the wine club sent you a couple of different bottles of wine to drink. These days, there are subscription boxes. And, there are subscription boxes for just about everything — beauty products, beer, perfume, Japanese snacks, and fishing tackle. You name it; there’s a subscription box for it. There are even subscription boxes for Portuguese products.
I had already heard of one of the subscription boxes, Tuga Box, but I didn’t know that there were that many different Portuguese subscription boxes. Every month, these companies send out carefully selected Portuguese products. The products are usually food-related items, but they could also be Portuguese products such as pottery or cork-based products. You don’t know what they are in advance, so every month is a fun surprise.
If you love everything to do with Portugal, this could be a great little treat for yourself. They’re also great gift ideas if you’re struggling with ideas for the Portugalophile in your life: you can send them one box and, if they like it, they can set up a subscription.
Tuga Box is one of the most popular Portuguese subscription boxes, and the subscription box that offers the best value for money. Every subscription box includes 5-7 Portuguese products that are carefully hand-selected for that month’s box. Some of the products from previous months include a small bottle of Madeira wine, Maria biscuits, a collection of photographs of Portugal, almonds from Portugal, and tea from Porto.
Tuga Box costs €30 for one box, if you just want to try it out. If you subscribe you can pay per month (€30) or buy a discounted quarterly subscription: €81 every three months (don’t worry, the box is still monthly). Prices are inclusive of shipping.
Note: Lusitan Box looks like it might have closed down.
Lusitan box is a Portuguese food subscription box aimed at foodies interested in Portuguese food. A new subscription box is sent out every three months, filled with 5-7 Portuguese food products and sample recipes. In previous months, boxes have includes goat’s cheese, jam, a knife made from olive wood, and Portuguese recipes. Lusitan Box is a good choice if you’re looking for a subscription box, but want your boxes spaced out over a few months.
Lusitan Box costs €33 for one box, €64 for a 6-month subscription (two boxes), or €120 for the year (4 boxes). Prices are not inclusive of shipping which adds around €4 to the cost of each box.
Prices accurate at the time of writing.
