6 Silves Restaurants You Have To Try

By James | Last updated: October 2019* | 1 Comment.

If you’re visiting Silves (or even better, staying there), visiting some of the local restaurants is a must. Situated inland and away from the tourism-focused coast, the restaurants in Silves don’t cater exclusively to foreigners. This means that the quality tends to be higher and the value for money even better. We’ve written about some of our favourites.

Best for traditional Portuguese food: Recanto dos Mouros

ensopada de borrego

There’s no shortage of traditional Portuguese restaurants in Silves (and the wider Algarve) but we chose Recanto dos Mouros because it’s probably the best in Silves. The menu consists of traditional Portuguese dishes such as Javali à Casa (wild boar– an Algarve speciality), Ensopada de Borrego (lamb stew with bread), and Arroz de Tamboril (monkfish rice). For dessert, there’s a counter of traditional Portuguese desserts to choose from like Flan and Delicia Algarvia.

Service is usually fast and attentive, and there’s plenty of space if you’re going in a group. If you sit outside, you have excellent views of Silves Castle.

Best for piri piri chicken: Churrasqueira Valdemar

At Churrasqueira Valdemar you’ll be asked three questions: “Chicken? Salad? Chips?” The answer to all three is, of course, “yes.” Although they’ve recently begun expanding their menu to include other dishes like fish, that’s really all this restaurant does: piri-piri chicken with salad and chips. You’ll get a couvert of Algarve carrots, olives, and bread to pick at while you wait and a dessert of orange seasoned with cinnamon, almond cake, roasted nuts, and dried figs at the end.

The setup is fairly basic: there’s a BBQ outside where the chicken is cooked and a couple of tables setup along the street. Takeaway is possible but you will have to drive down and get it yourself so it’s usually just as easy to sit at one of the tables. It’s an incredibly popular place and usually very busy during the summer so try to get there early if you want to get a table.

Best for seafood: Rui Marisqueira

Rui Marisqueira is a restaurant often mentioned in the same breath as the Michelin Star restaurants of the Algarve. It’s famous for shellfish, particularly crab and lobster, but it also offers great grilled fish dishes and cataplanas as well. It is definitely the best seafood and shellfish restaurant in Silves and one of the best (and most affordable) in the Algarve as a whole.

Best for special occasions: O Barradas

As great as restaurants like Recanto dos Mouros and Churrasqueira Valdemar are, some occasions call for something a little fancier. O Barradas and O Alambique (below) are two Silves restaurants that are ideal for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and the last night of a holiday.

Situated in a converted country farmhouse just outside of Silves, O Barradas is run by Luís Pequeno and his wife Andrea. The inside is beautifully decorated, with a log fire to keep you warm during the winter. The outside terrace offers beautiful views over the nearby vineyards.

The dishes are based on traditional Portuguese recipes but with a contemporary twist and there’s an excellent wine cellar to choose from (we really enjoyed the Quinta do Quetzal red from the Alentejo). Popular food choices are baked wild fish and lamb stew.

Best for something different: O Alambique

O Alambique is a great restaurant for a special occasion or if you’re simply looking for a change from traditional Portuguese food. Every week, there’s a new themed menu (keep up to date with the latest specials on their Facebook page). Previously, this has included German food, Caribbean food, and a three-course meal created with chocolate. They also have a special set menu on Mondays that’s different to what they offer the rest of the week.

There are lots of great restaurants in Silves to visit, and these are just five of our favourites. If we haven’t mentioned the best place to eat in Silves (in your opinion), feel free to pop it in the comments. We’ll make sure and visit next time we’re in town.

Best for posh comfort food: Rainha

A few years ago this was a traditional Portuguese restaurant in the hills, but after the previous owner passed away Rainha changed hands and style. Today it’s a swanky Belgian-influenced fine dining restaurant, with a gin bar on the side.

Rainha primarily serves meat dishes (like succulent pork cheeks and wild boar stew), but the frequently-changing specials board usually includes at least one fish dish as well. The owners, Eddie and Magda (who previously cooked at Chrissy’s in Lagoa), are incredibly accommodating. If you ring ahead, they’re more than happy to put together something creative for vegetarians, vegans, gluten free folk and other special diets.

While Rainha’s prices are a Euro or two more expensive than many of the grilled-meat-and-chips restaurants in Silves, the prices are extremely reasonable for what you get. It’s a great option for a nice meal out, particularly if you’re looking for a change from the traditional Portuguese dishes found in most restaurants in Silves.
