Visiting the Algarve in February offers a delightful escape from the winter blues common in the rest of Europe and North America and a chance to embrace the region’s unique charm during its quieter season.

With the hustle and bustle of the summer months a distant memory, February in the Algarve welcomes travellers to explore its picturesque towns, indulge in its culinary delights, and experience its cultural treasures at a leisurely pace.

Whether you’re seeking romantic getaways, outdoor adventures, or simply a tranquil retreat, the Algarve in February unveils its own brand of magic waiting to be discovered.

Reasons to visit the Algarve in February

  • With around 6 hours of sunshine each day, it’s a great choice if you’re suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which can lead to lead to mild depression and anxiety.
  • It’s still the low season, so you can enjoy endless stretches of Europe’s most beautiful beaches all to yourself, even if it mightn’t be warm enough for sunbathing. And with daytime temperatures reaching 18°C, it’ll still be warm enough to wear a t-shirt during the middle of the day.
  • Temperatures are warm but won’t be too hot. Now is a good time to go if you fancy a round of golf, a hike along a section of the Via Algarviana or the Fisherman’s Trail, or a lazy day tasting the produce at one of the region’s exciting new wineries.
  • Accommodation is cheap. Hotel prices are often at least 50% cheaper in February than they are in July and August.
  • There’s quite a bit going on. People are getting back into gear after their Christmas break, and are preparing for the shoulder season which starts next month.

What to Pack

  1. Warm weather clothing: While the Algarve in February is milder than many other European destinations, you can still enjoy relatively warm and sunny days. It’s a good idea to bring t-shirts and perhaps even lightweight trousers for daytime outings. Fingers crossed, it’ll be good for you!
  2. Light jackets or sweaters: Evenings in February can bring cooler temperatures and occasional overcast days. To ensure your comfort, pack a light jacket and a sweater or two that allows you to layer up for added warmth when needed. It’s also a good idea to have a few warm layers for inside the house if you’re staying in an Airbnb as properties in Portugal don’t always have central heating.
  3. Waterproof clothing: Although February in the Algarve is generally pleasant, there may be a few rainy days. Be prepared by including waterproof gear in your packing list, such as a raincoat or umbrella, to stay dry during unexpected showers.
  4. Sunscreen: Despite the milder temperatures, the Algarve can still offer sunny days in February. To protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays, ensure you pack sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection.
  5. Comfortable shoes: The Algarve is a wonderful region for walking, especially in February when the weather will be cooler. Bring along comfortable and sturdy shoes suitable for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Given the cobblestone streets, it’s advisable to avoid high heels and opt for flat-soled shoes that provide stability.
  6. Light layers: The weather in February can be variable, with sunshine and clouds alternating throughout the day. To adapt to changing conditions, pack lightweight layers that you can easily add or remove as needed, particularly during the cooler evenings.

What to do

  • Walking: Take advantage of the pleasant weather and explore the region on foot. Whether you opt for day hikes like the 7 Hanging Valleys or embark on longer multi-day walks like the Fisherman’s Trail, the Algarve offers a plethora of scenic routes to choose from.
  • Surfing: February is an excellent time to try your hand at surfing. With the protection of a wetsuit, you can comfortably brave the initial cold water and enjoy the waves as you learn this exhilarating sport.
  • Golf: Enjoy a round of golf without the need to rise early to beat the scorching summer sun. The Algarve boasts numerous picturesque golf courses where you can perfect your swing.
  • Sightseeing: With fewer tourists around, you’ll have a more relaxed experience exploring attractions in places like Faro or Silves, which can often be crowded during the peak season. Take your time to appreciate the cultural and historical treasures of the region.

Note: Because this is the low season, some attractions such as waterparks are likely to be closed as are some restaurants, bars, and other amenities.

What’s on in the Algarve in February?

Carnival, Loulé

Brexit float at Loule careval

Who needs Rio de Janeiro? The Algarve’s oldest carnival has a fantastic atmosphere, too. The three day event takes place over Shrove Tuesday and features plenty of dancing, street food and a parade with themed floats. Some can be quite political, so we’re excited to see what’s on display after Brexit and Trump.

Note: if Easter is late, Carnival will take place in March.

Volta ao Algarve

Participants cover more than 690 kilometres in Volta ao Algarve, the region’s biggest bicycle race. If you’re not around to watch the cyclists go by, you can watch from home on Eurosport or ITV4.
