Good news for shoppers in Portugal: Amazon Spain is now available in Portuguese as well as Spanish.
To switch from Spanish to Portuguese:
- Head to Amazon.es
- Click on the Spanish flag next to the search box. This will give you a choice of two languages: Spanish or Portuguese.
If you’re logged in, this will save your preferences so that it’s always set to Portuguese.
Well, this is good news for Portuguese-speaking shoppers in Portugal anyway. While the change will no doubt be welcomed by the hundreds of thousands of Portuguese who shop online at Amazon Spain, most Portuguese are already very capable of understanding Spanish – especially when it’s written down.
English speakers, on the other hand? That’s another story. Still, it should be easier for expats living in Portugal to browse Amazon Spain in Portuguese rather than in Spanish. And, it’ll be a lot more productive as well. Rather than simply spending money, shopping at Amazon will be a small Portuguese lesson as well.
To view Amazon Spain in English, you’ll need to use a translation tool like Google Translate. You can simply paste the URL of the product into Google Translate (rather than copying and pasting the text) and Google will attempt to translate the entire page for you.
Is Amazon coming to Portugal?
Amazon has been due to open a Portuguese operation for several years now but it continues to be delayed. Given this news, it’s likely that Portuguese shoppers will continue to have to shop at Amazon Spain for the foreseeable future.
Although there are multiple European and international Amazon sites (like Amazon Germany, UK, France, etc), Amazon Spain is often the best option for shoppers in Portugal as it offers free delivery on most orders over €29 (or €19 for books).
