Want To Import Your Car Into Portugal? Check It’s Worth It

Written by / Last updated on January 24, 2025

Thinking about bringing your beloved car to Portugal? While it’s possible to import a vehicle tax-free when moving here, the process isn’t always straightforward.

Let’s break down what you need to know.

The Tax-Free Window

When moving to Portugal, you have a one-time opportunity to import a vehicle without paying Portugal’s hefty vehicle tax (ISV) and VAT (IVA).

This can save you thousands of euros, but there’s a catch – well, several catches.

Main Requirements

  • You must move to Portugal within 12 months before or after importing the car
  • You need to have owned the car for at least 6 months before moving
  • You must have lived in your previous country for at least 6 months in the year before moving
  • You’ll need a Portuguese NIF number and residency
  • You can’t sell the car within the first year in Portugal

Important: Miss any of these requirements and you’ll be looking at paying full import taxes, which can be eye-wateringly expensive.

When Tax-Free Import Might Not Be Best

Surprisingly, sometimes paying taxes makes more sense.

Consider paying taxes if you’re importing:

  • A small car (1000-1400cc)
  • An electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • A commercial vehicle
  • A motorcycle

Note: This mainly applies to EU imports. For non-EU imports (like from the US or UK), the tax-free route is usually better due to additional VAT charges.

The Hidden Costs

Beyond the obvious shipping costs, consider:

  • Agent fees (typically €1,000-€2,000)
  • Annual road tax (higher for larger engines)
  • Potential maintenance costs (parts might be harder to find)
  • Insurance (some models might be more expensive to insure)

Practical Considerations

Before committing, ask yourself:

  • Is your car model common in Europe? If not, parts could be expensive or hard to find
  • Will it fit Portuguese roads? Those charming narrow streets aren’t so charming in a Ford F-150
  • Is shipping cost-effective? For North Americans, for example, factor in container shipping costs

Pro tip: If you’re already shipping your household goods in a container, adding your car might be more cost-effective than shipping it separately.

The Verdict

For most people moving from the US or UK, buying a car in Portugal is simpler and often cheaper once you factor in all costs. However, importing might make sense if:

  • Your car has significant sentimental or financial value
  • It’s a model that’s expensive in Portugal
  • You’re comfortable navigating Portuguese bureaucracy (or happy to pay an agent)
  • You want an automatic (as these can be harder to find in Portugal)

Want to Import Anyway?

If you decide to proceed:

  1. Start the process early – it can take months
  2. Get quotes from multiple importing agents
  3. Ensure all documentation is perfect – even small errors can cause major delays
  4. Budget for unexpected costs

Pro tip: Working with an agent will cost more upfront but can save money (and headaches) in the long run.
