Vila do Bispo, Algarve: Travel Guide

Last updated: October 2019* | 2 Comments

Vila do Bispo is a small town in the Western Algarve, and is situated roughly 8 km from Sagres which is on the Southwestern tip of the Algarve.

It’s also just a short drive from many wonderful beaches: Praia do Castelejo (4.3 km), Praia do Martinhal (9.2 km), Praia da Mareta (10 km), and Praia da Cordoama (4.8 km).

The town itself is very small and very peaceful. It attracts a few surfers, walkers, and other visitors who are looking for peace and quiet, but with only a few cafés and restaurants, the town can be very quiet.

There are a few attractions, particularly the church (Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição) and square, but not much else. This does keep the town peaceful and free from busloads of tourists, which is one of the reasons that people choose to stay here rather than nearby.

Those nearby alternatives include Sagres, a town that primarily caters to surfers, and Burgau and Praia da Luz, two small and fairly low-key beach resort towns.

Handpicked accommodation in Vila do Bispo

  • Pure Flor de Esteva – Boutique Bed & breakfast with shared kitchen and lounge, terrace, and relaxing garden area.
  • Ardmar B&B – Bed & breakfast with terrace and gardens.
  • Casa Iemanjá – Stylish and contemporary 2 bedroom house for rent with facilities that includefree wifi and an outdoor BBQ area.

Do I need a car?

It is possible to visit Vila do Bispo without a car, but not particularly recommended. Local buses only really go to Lagos and Sagres and, although you can connect to other places from there, it probably makes more sense to stay in Sagres if you’re visiting the Algarve without a car.

Areas like the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, and many of the beaches along the West Coast, are also difficult to reach without a car. If you can drive, it’s definitely a good idea.
