Big News for Pet Owners: Moving to Portugal from the UK Just Got Easier

If you’ve been dreaming of sunshine, seaside towns, and a better lifestyle in Portugal, but hesitated because of the hassle of bringing your pet, there’s great news: the EU Pet Passport scheme is back for UK residents.

As of May 19, 2025, a new agreement between the UK and EU means that pet passports are once again valid for cats and dogs traveling from the UK to the EU. This marks a welcome end to the post-Brexit red tape that frustrated pet owners for years.

Goodbye, AHC Headaches

Since Brexit, UK pet owners have had to apply for an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) before every trip to Europe. Each certificate could cost upwards of £100, had to be issued within 10 days of travel, and involved extra vet visits.

Why This Is Great News for Anyone Moving to Portugal

Here’s how the return of pet passports makes relocating with your pet much easier:

  • One-time paperwork: No need for a new certificate for each trip—just update your pet’s vaccinations on schedule.
  • Lower costs: Save on repeat vet fees and avoid last-minute travel stress.
  • No quarantine: As long as your documentation is in order, your pet can enter Portugal without delay.

The Bottom Line

For UK pet owners planning to move to Portugal—or even just visit more easily—this policy change is a game-changer. The new agreement not only simplifies international travel for pets but also brings back the freedom and spontaneity many families enjoyed before Brexit.
