Can I Come to Portugal While My D7 Is Being Processed?

Written by: | Last Updated: April 22, 2026

Many people want to come to Portugal while they wait for their D7 or other visa application (like the Digital Nomad Visa) to be processed. They may already be renting a property, tying up loose ends at home, or simply keen to start their new life in Portugal as soon as possible.

They can, and many of our clients ask for a second passport, which in the US it’s a possibility. When your passport is legally withheld, you can ask for a second passport.

In practical terms, yes, you may be able to come to Portugal while your application is being processed. The key issue is whether you still have a valid passport or other travel document in your possession. In some countries or consulates, your passport is not held for the full processing period, or you may be able to pay to keep it until it is needed. In others, such as the US, applicants often look into getting a second passport if the original is being legally withheld.

You should also make sure you have not already used too many of your Schengen days under the 90/180-day rule.

So the short answer is: if you still have a valid travel document and you are within your Schengen allowance, then yes, you can usually come to Portugal while your D7 is being processed.
